TALENT ISN’T EVENLY DISTRIBUTED

Unfortunately, developers aren’t moving to the Midwest, no matter how good the cheese curds.

If a developer is really good, they’re hanging with the coconut man in Dolores Park. (Dolores Park is a popular spot in San Francisco. The coconut man can only be understood through experience.) If they’re pretty good, they’re in New York. And if they’re cost-conscious or a bit old-fashioned, they’re in Seattle or Austin. Now, this is obviously a gross generalization. But the theme is consistent—there’s a shortage of talent for product management, UI/UX design, data science, and the latest development platform if you’re not a tech hub or tech company.

So what should we do? Dial in the consultants?

According to Brandon: “Traditional consulting firms are expensive, lack agility, and have considerable talent restraints. Design agencies do not have the end-to-end capabilities for development and deployment. Local dev shops do not have the scale and diversity of skills for a large enterprise. The solution for enterprises if they need scale, agility, and top talent is to foster distributed software networks.”

Fortunately, while the talent isn’t evenly distributed, opportunity is.
